EATON TWP. OH - Two Ohio Patrol troopers involved in a high-speed crash while pursuing a drunk driver on Durkee Road earlier this month remain on light duty.
A video obtained by The Chronicle-Telegram through a public records request shows the sequence of events, but the dashboard camera goes black when it gets knocked over during the crash.
Sgt. David Dylag was driving on Durkee Road on Aug. 2 when he spotteda driver suspected of intoxication going the opposite direction. He quickly pulls off the road, activates his lights and makes a three-pointturn to pursue the vehicle, the video shows.
Seconds later, Trooper Lance Deshuk spots the same vehicle and pulls into the driveway of a private residence to also change direction.
While he's pulling out of the driveway, Dylag, going about 60 mph, strikes Deshuk on the rear passenger side at 10:16 p.m. Aug. 2.
Both troopers suffered minor injuries and were taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. Their cars, Dodge Chargers, sustained heavy damage and had to be towed.
The alleged intoxicated driver was apprehended a few hours later, on Aug.3 by North Ridgeville police. The driver, Robert F. Steele, 52, of Grafton, was turned over to the Lorain County Sheriff's Office and charged with operating a vehicle impaired, fleeing, driving in marked lanes, driving with an open contained and driving under suspension. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing and will face a grand jury in Lorain County.
